The Open Road

Sometimes with miles and miles of open, unexplored road ahead of you, it’s hard to stick to the beaten path. You know that path so well, you could do it with your eyes closed. You know that everything you care about lies at the end of a deeply rutted trail, but so does everything you know.
Personally, coming home to my beautiful, young bride, Girl2, and if I’m lucky Girl1 and Boy1, is the best part of the day. But there are countless days when on the way to work I wonder about turning right instead of left. What amazing adventure and fabulous fortune lies at the end of the road less traveled? Could my loved ones accept it if taking that trail meant less fortune but more fun and adventure? Could I? Some days it’s just really very difficult not to just jump out there and find out.

Retirement is sorta like that, especially if you have enough money coming in to pay the necessities. You can run and play and take the “road less traveled.” Unforutnately what happens is you become so busy being retired that you once again forget about the road less traveled. But on the other hand, there is always a bend or turn that hasn’t been taken just waiting for someone to turn.
I did it! Back in September 2008, I “up and quit” my job. Found a new one, yadda yadda, quit again. We decided it’s time for me to stay home. And even though we are now down to our last $300, I have absolutely no regrets! But of course, I was NOT the bread-winner of the family, so my decisions had a much smaller impact.
The deciding factor: How much do I get paid to put up with the boss’s crap and be treated like the un-invited cockroach, always being stomped on, or just barely making it out from under the shoe! I decided I wasn’t being paid enough to put up with that, again!
