Fish and Chips

Fish and Chips
I just got in from a whirlwind business trip to Houma, Louisiana. A quick look at a map made me painfully aware of how close I would be to New Orleans AND how much free time I was going to have available to me. You know, of course, that I couldn’t just sit in the motel room and let that opportunity slide by.

One of the other managers from my day job and I drove the hour down to N’ahlean’s for the single purpose of me having oysters and beer on Bourbon Street. We parked the truck in a garage on Carandolet St. and walked all the way down Bourbon St. until we came to the first place that sold beer. I got my brew and walked until we ran out of street lights. Then we turned around and began walking back looking for a nice, quiet place to eat.

Just like in the movies, the streets were loaded with people having fun, side-show barkers, street musicians, and scantily clad women. I could live here and be happy. All was right with the world until we began looking for dinner. Neither one of us are big fans of Cajun cuisine and we had been talking about beer battered fish. We were both looking for fish and chips. Shockingly, none of the restaurants we found had a simple fish and chips basket. Almost everything was either some kind of fish steak, or fried catfish. Catfish?!? Believe it or not, that’s what we settled for, fried catfish and waffle fries. The restaurant was amazing, the service was outstanding and the food was out of this world. I got my 1/2 dozen oysters on the half shell, even though they were out of season. But I can finally say I’ve had oysters and beer on Bourbon street.

I couldn’t wait to get home, though, and go to Sean Cummings’ Irish Pub in Oklahoma City for some beer battered fish and chips.
